marketing ploy? edit... Site History
Prior to November 2007 Grid.org operated as a public interest Internet research grid with connections to more than 3.6 million devices worldwide, with its primary mission being to demonstrate the power of early grid technology. In this capacity, Grid.org processed data related to cancer, smallpox, and human genome research among other projects. The first mission having been successfully completed, we have worked with community members to broaden the reach of the site and encourage use of open source technologies for grid computing at large.successfully completed...right....

Prior to November 2007 Grid.org operated as a public interest Internet research grid with connections to more than 3.6 million devices worldwide, with its primary mission being to demonstrate the power of early grid technology. In this capacity, Grid.org processed data allegedly related to cancer, smallpox, and human genome research among other projects. The first mission having been a dismal failure, we have worked with community members to broaden the reach of the site and encourage use of open source technologies for grid computing at large. Having boned it's volunteer members mercilessly for several years, Grid.org now feels fully qualified to bone the wider community as a whole.More to the point.

OK, so I've read this stuff before the coffee has kicked in and the question is, what is this all about? Far as I can tell, they're not hosting projects of their own, just furnishing the platform to run projects of members chioce. So, if I want to set up a grid project to figure the odds of hitting 22 at roulette, they'll host that? Are they trying to compete with BOINC?

There is no competition between Boinc and UD... UD software has proven it's instability when the database reaches a certain size..

It's great to have you back! With the new grid.org, you can download the free Cluster Express software to build your own computing clusters. You can then run any grid applications you like. The grid.org website was previously hosting a number of grid computing projects, however now it focuses on the software that researchers can use to run their own scientific projects. If you are interested in just volunteering your home computers and not operating your own cluster network, then we invite you to look at one of the many projects already available.

If you are interested in contributing to such a project, I recommend the World Community Grid (www.worldcommunitygrid.org). I'm on their scientific advisory board, and they have excellent projects underway. Regards -- Ian. Hmmmm, so someone from WCG is involved in this too I see cswchan and Vester are members too
