I must say that he is by far the most impressive swimmer to come along in a long time......To watch the team win the 400 relay by .08 of a second was amazing....It also goes to show that you are only as good as your team mates.........

All the other sports should NOT be allowed to get away with the BS that they do.  Bashings, rapes, illicit drug abuse ... they ARE bound by the same law as the rest of us and of anything deserve to be made examples of, not let off.

I guess that it boils down to the fact that I don't think that smoking pot should be illegal..............

Saw too many potheads over the year to want anything that encourages addictive sorts [of which there are more than we'd like to admit] to check out of life and their brains.

Just like anything else in life a person can take something to excess...........I don't see him as that type of person...........

They don't deserve to be made examples of or let off - but treated the same as anyone else.  I understand that isn't the case but how it should be.

These people are roll models for our kids.  Good or bad is up to them, but being celebs puts them up there.  If they want to live in the lime light, as so many of them do, then they should face the responsibility for the example the give and be prepared for the consequences of giving a bad one.  To put it another way, how is a teacher not responsible for teaching their students to do the wrong thing?  How is a General not responsible for ordering his troops to do the wrong thing?  How is a cult leader (which is probably the closest analogy) not responsible for getting their disciples to do the wrong thing in the name of <insert deity here>?  It's no different from a parent being responsible for teaching a child to lie, cheat and steal ... just on a far larger scale.
I also hold that those who hold these idiots up as "heros" (yet I mean the promoters and managers) are responsible for the dross they push.  They tell the sporting apes that they are "gods" until the apes believe it, then take no responsibility when the apes start screaming, flinging poo and tearing into people.

"Professional" sports people should be held to professional standards, just like any REAL professional, not allowed to behave like recalcitrant chimps.

The legitimate media, newspapers, usually report the arrests of moronic celebrities when they get busted for drugs or DUI's, then the Hollywood media turns them into pathetic victims, as if someone forced them to take dope or drink too much.  The worst is when a celeb dies of this behaviour like Heath Ledger.  Utterly ridiculous the way everyone went on about what a tragedy it was, blah, blah, blah.  The frikkin idiot took an overdose of illegal drugs for chrissake!He should NOT be held up as a hero or victim but as an example of the result of sheer stupidity.
