Hi All
If you've not seen this thread yet, then have a look. Dell is running a competition to find the best way to "change the world". Someone has suggested installing the WCG agent on all new computers to raise awareness and give people the opportunity to crunch who might not have found out about it otherwise.
This is the WCG campaign to vote for it until it's the top idea. We only need a few hundred votes to get it there and there are only a few days left to vote. Please have a look at this thread: Dell Social Innovation Competition

Won't fly... Preinstall Boinc? People will freak the hell out. AAAAArrg Taskman shows my CPU always running 100%? Huh? Boinc? Is my new computer some form of pornographic zombie?
If it's not installed to run as a service, then like all other bloatware, it'll get removed from the machine in short order.

Do you really think the average person has a clue what % their cpu runs, or where to even find that info ??

Well the default throttle setting is 60% anyway, not 100%, and if the machine has Vista it's gonna spend a lot of it's time at 100% usage anyway so what'd the difference.

Blimey, it doesn't take much to smap a thread away from the subject round here!Won't fly... Preinstall Boinc? People will freak the hell out. AAAAArrg Taskman shows my CPU always running 100%? Huh? Boinc? Is my new computer some form of pornographic zombie?

I had a think about this and left a comment on the voting site accordingly. The only way this would fly is if the agent was installed and ran the setup option with an introductory screen on first start to explain what it's all about. This is because people need to be given the option to run it, you can't have it running without their permission. Also, if it was going to be configured to run in the background from the start then you need to have entered user credentials... and who will be the lucky user to get stats off everyone who buys a dell in the future?
My concern is that I don't know if the manufacturers will wear it. I have a Dell PC and when BOINC is running, the fans are quite noisy - to the point that because that particular cruncher is in my living room, it doesn't run from 6pm to Midnight so it doesn't disturb me when I'm there. When BOINC processing is suspended it's as quiet as a mouse (no - it doesn't squeak). If this is going to cause the PCs to become socially unacceptable then that's a big turnoff. There are also issues about reduced lifespan of the hardware due to running it so hot, but with most manufacturers offering only a 1 year warranty, this might actually work in their favour as people will come back sooner for repairs and replacements.

I see your concern but they make fans that are super quiet these days............I have 4 machines running in one room and you can't even tell that they are on, let alone crunching 24/7..............

Those of us with "the bug" know to look out for the quiet fans. Many regular folk don't know they exist and OEMs don't tend to use them.

And we have no problem spending the extra money for them..............

most people are afraid to even peek inside cause they been told warranty will be void if this little sticker/seal on back is tampered with and been told stories about the magic smoke my B.I.L. is one of these peeps dont want me or my sons touching the keyboard for at least a year after warranty expires. sad thing (or good thing) is his 13 yr old daughter knows more about puter than mom & dad combined

I totally agree.
However, I'm now more of a casual cruncher. I built a fast quiet machine from the ground up, taking a lot of advice from this an other forums, but I no longer have the time or money to spend on that sort of thing. I just want to buy a PC to do a job and not monkey around with it unless I have to. I'm likely to open the case to solve a problem rather than worry about the warranty as I know what I'm doing, but I'm done with modding. The point is that people who are going to mod their boxes are surely more likely to build from the ground up to chose all the specific parts they want, so perhaps are less likely to buy something like a Dell?
The idea here is to make WCG appeal to those people who wont be familiar with Grid computing, BOINC, etc (The sort of people like Jan's Brother-in-law?). I think that it is Dell that would be worried about pre-installing an app on their boxes that might encourage them to be noisier.

I don't think that the cost will break Dell to put in a quiet fan................

Nicely said - another consideration is the power consumption of leaving the puter on 24x7. I think an better option would be to have Dell offer it as an 'free' install with links and explanation to to buyers as to what it is, and give them the choice.

I got an email saying that they are now in round 2 of voting.........

They send that to everyone who voted, regardless of what they voted for. The top 25 ideas move through to round 2, and this one finished 33rd. On the plus side, I've since read that the judges will pick a further 75 ideas to join the top 25 from the public vote... so it could still be in with a chance!
