...those fancy cards and usb sticks that cell phone companies are pushing for wireless internet....seem to all come with a 5gb limit. (or at least carriers I would consider do) Thinking  I've never actually tried to measure how much data I use - how close do you usually get to that 5gb limit? Thinking

MiFi looks pretty cool.... Popcorn  http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/05/13/verizon-mifi-2200-review/

I forwarded my music library from a fried machine to the new one via Hotmail and burned thru 100 mb in one evening. Dunno how much my usual email and posting burns. Assuming I'm a LIGHT user. Huh?

what are you using to check that? Thinking  was going to look at the connection status thingy, but pretty sure that's only number of packets, not actual size of traffic. Thinking  even the stats in my router control panel look like number of packets. Thinking

Using Network Meter sidebar gadget. Tells me the Rig's IP, the IP comcast has me assigned to, Up/Down speeds and How much data has been transmitted/recieved.

Too bad it isn't cumulative. Always starts back at zero after a restart.. Be kinda cool if it would let you track the traffic over the entire month.
Well, I guess it could, but figure the odds on a Winblows rig not needing at least one restart during the month.  rofl

Other thoughts...Fing - your numbers, they from the same rig your forum is running on?  Any online gaming going on in the past day, or is that pretty much just traffic from web browsing? Streaming radio?

GP - you running some gadget that tells you how much traffic as well? Thinking  Just curious where you got the number from...also, is that both sent/received?

Anyhow...figured I'll put the MiFi (from earlier post) to the test.  Work discount brings monthly cost fairly comparable to cable, and portability sounds good, though I have a feeling it'll get returned within the 30 day window as 5gb is probably on the low side for my usage (well, not so much my personal usage, moreso the extra traffic caused by hosting some of the dc stat stuff Thinking  should look into moving some of that to the main server one of these days).  If nothing else, I'll get to avoid smap withdrawal while on vacation... Hoghappy

Ooo...they give me free next day shipping too...

100MB isn't very many music files (most are about 4.3MB each for typical MP3s)  Thinking

We regularly burn through 10-12GB a month here, uploads not counted.

Back to the original question, I've a 5gb limit per month on my card, and only once on the travel lappy did I go over. Normal when I'm traveling for the month is around 3gb give or take. But I'm also not using it when at home, and work pays for it BUT if you go over you will here about it from accounting....... Verizon is the plan we have for the aircards, but I can also use the Crackberry if needed.

tethering the crackberry was another option i considered, and the direction i have a feeling that i'll eventually head if i decide to keep some sort of mobile internet thing, though i wanted to tinker with the mifi first. Embarrassed lol

Tethering works, but isn't as fast - and on mine sucks the battery down fast, unless it's charging at the same time. If you can get a plan you can live under aircards are fasterand easier IMHO.

I would then think 5gb would be fine, that's how I use mine - travel, or camping only............... I've got an USB727 and it hold close to 1.5 most of the time.

5gig really isn't that much you are going to use it all month long.... I am one of the lucky ones that signed up years ago to an unlimited plan and I run about 15-20 gig a month.. I bought a wireless router to go with it and use it as my main connection in South Florida.... I ran (still am) M-12 on it to use about 10 gig a day to see if it truely is unlimited and so far they haven't said a word thru 2 billing cycles.... rofl

BWMeter is a powerful bandwidth meter, monitor and traffic controller, which measures, displays and controls all traffic to/from your computer or on your network. Unlike other products, it can analyze the data packets (where they come from, where they go, which port and protocol they use). This makes it possible to distinguish between local and internet traffic for example. BWMeter can also be used for traffic control by setting a speed limit for all kinds of connections or restricting access to certain internet sites. It creates statistics for all computers in your network, measuring and displaying all LAN traffic as well as download / upload from the internet. You can even define filters which show your transfer with certain internet addresses (e.g. to see how much data you download from your favorite news server). BWMeter is ideal for home users to get an overview of how much bandwidth they use, as well as small to large businesses, where one computer can control the traffic and maintain the statistics of downloaded / uploaded data of all computers in the network. The product is easy to configure and offers a rich set of options and features for beginners as well as experts and network administrators.

Both from what I read...
