perl isn't that bad, it's syntax just isn't very pretty...

I'm finding this.  It doesn't help that the chapter went from "This is Perl" to full system admin scripts in two pages.  I can recognise what a lot of it is doing, but I can't write the stuff yet.

I did.  It didn't work!  I'm suspicious some of the examples are there to illustrate concepts rather than be working examples of code. 

Gotta love that. "here's a few random lines of code figure the rest out yourself"

Not helpful if you learn partly by taking working code and fiddling with it till it breaks or at least does something very different.
