welcome to the dc zone, zernon i think as long as the dots are popping up on the screen, it should be set and running, just minimize it and let it run in the background.

Hi Zernon, welcome to the Zone.
You might want to adjust a couple of the default settings.
With the agent open, click on Agent->Properties and then click the Network icon.
The default setting for Delay Between Measurements is 30. You can lower the delay to 15 to maximize the number of measurements.
If you have a fast internet connection (DSL, Cable...) you can increase the File Transfer Rate to 51. I don't know it that increases throughput any, but that's how I have mine set.

If you have a fast internet connection (DSL, Cable...) you can increase the File Transfer Rate to 51. I don't know it that increases throughput any, but that's how I have mine set. Be sure to think about this if you have any download restrictions on you Internet connection. I've done a rough test on bandwith throughputs and some estimated download capacities at different settings. You can find them here and you may want to look at them. It's only a "finger in the air" estimation, but I think it's the closest thing we've got at the moment.
I also notice that you've not returned any measurements yet. These normally show after the first hour or so and I just wanted to check that you weren't still experiencing any further connectivity problems. You mentioned that you just had the dot in the middle. If there are no other connected dots coming out of the pale blob thing on the main screen then you may not be connecting. The way to test this is to open the agent, go to Agent -> Properties and then select the "Network" button. At the bottom right, of the properties window you will see a box with "Blocked status" and 2 globes. Click the "Check Blocking" button and wait... possibly for a minute or so whilst it checks. If both of the Globes come back as Red then you know that you are unable to make any connections.
Some reasons might be:
- You are using a desktop firewall. Your firewall may not be configured as standard to let this traffic out and/or back. If you are using ZoneAlarm Pro, then some help is available here. This is what I used to get it working for me. If you are using the free ZoneAlarm then let us know as I think that some of the guys on here had some problems which they solved on the free Zonealarm. If you are using any other kind of firewall (including MS Windows XP inbuilt one) then let us know and we'll see what we can do.
- Your ISP is blocking this traffic. This is quite unusual I would say, but it's worth looking on your ISP's website to find out what their policy is on certain types of traffic. I'm not aware of an ISP yet that blocks both ICMP and UDP.
- You are on a company network with firewall restrictions. I find that machines at home will only work on ICMP through my home firewall, but that the one I have running at work will only run on UDP as my work firewall blocks ICMP traffic. If you are on a work network and both are blocked, maybe have a word with your network admin to find out if there is a way to get it working?
If there are any other elements that you feel may be affecting this then again, let us know your setup and I'm sure we can try to get it running for you?[/color]

I've just installed DIMES on a new device. This is my first time installing v0.4.2 from scratch. It's not letting me register the agent at all and doesn't seem to be downloading the file from the server.
I've asked the question on the DIMES forum.

Firewall ?
Correct Password ? <-- I reported a bug where if you put the wrong password in then it keeps going 'woosh woosh' forever
Dimes servers could be down.

Firewall off and password entered so many times I must have got it right. The Servers must be up as my other agents are sending/receiving fine. I wonder if its a problem with the new client for new implementations?

If you have a spare Client Name that is no longer used (and worth a check anyway as you can cancel out) use the Already installed on here before.
It asks for name and password and then comes up with a list to choose from. That'll check the new client bit.
But double check JAVAW is allowed through the firewall.

No firewall enabled due to problem resolution. The issue is that it doesn't even ask me to register the client when I install... no username, password, client name or anything, just starts the client as if I was just starting windows having installed it previously.
When I look at properties, there is no username, agent name, email or anything entered. I try to enter it manually and it just hangs.
This machine is to replace another one that packed in (it's a work box) so I was going to re-use the device name anyway. I've also tried entering a different device name but still hangs.
All other connecticity is fine and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the agent a number of times, both the new 0.4.2 version from the website and the old 0.4 version which I had saved from previously.

Problem FixedI think that as this was running a standard WinXP image from my company, it may have been running a dodgy version of Java that maybe wasn't picked up by the agent as not being compatible but also not able to run it either.
Clearing out the logs and updating my JRE seems to have sorted it!
Thanks for all your help on this one Fluffy!

...updating my JRE seems to have sorted it! D'Oh!
In today's lesson we learn to RTFM.
The device in question was an IBM machine running IBM's JRE. Rather than going to www.java.com and downloading the latest version from Sun, I just installed it on this without really thinking.
Today, a quick browse at the DIMES download instructions made me realise what had happened.
Look at the last paragraph
--ooOoo--Anyway... back to the issue in hand - still no word from Zernon on the problem. Hope you get in touch soon!
