Title: Xtreme Systems Supercomputer Challenge
Post by: Dark Angel on April 13, 2010, 08:51:04 PM
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/announcement.php?f=207&a=75 (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/announcement.php?f=207&a=75)

For the "click impaired":

The XS WCG team is mounting a challenge in the first week of May to try and break into the Top Supercomputers list (or at least post equivalent numbers).  This is an all-in effort with folks not only recruiting like crazy but running everything and the washing machine (kitchen sinks don't have CPUs you see) over that week and a couple of days beforehand to get validations rolling.  Like I said, this is an ALL IN challenge.  It's intended to now only hit some ridiculous numbers but possibly make news (at least geek news anyway) with the sheer amount of computing power that's going to be unleashed, if only for a week or so.

Anyone who wants to hook up with them should go over and do so.  Conversely, since IBM have bragged that their servers can handle whatever is thrown at them, people could do the same thing with their own teams in a show of support.

One week, balls-to-the-wall, ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING online no matter what it is.  Are you up to the challenge?

paid to spend the week in a suite...
all expenses covered....
only catch being required to take some certification exams, but from a professional standpoint, not really a drawback...

naughty...   they did take my markers away though :'(  got moved to a cube without white boards....

Back in the dark ages, Lance Burton's magic show was the best on the strip. Less tinsel and more magic.

Guess this means I have to turn the rock back on and crunch for SC for awhile. Not likely to strain IBM with an antique Dell  ::) but what the hey.

No one person is going to strain IBM's servers, it's going to be a combination of all of us together that achieves it.  :thumb:

Ok, just so I'm clear (coz I get confused easily  :guru: )

Are people joining XS's push or are folk ramping up for their own teams in "moral support"?

BBT are talking about having a push ourselves, but it's not exactly solid at this stage.  There's been one or two voices of support but one or two don't make a ball-to-the-wall team push.

went back and read your original post again and actually clicked on the links this time

from what I read we need to join the XS team at wcg .... or i dont read an understand english very well  :hoghappy:

so off to do that tonight  :thumb:

If you're planning on helping Xtreme Systems in their challenge directly, then yes you need to join their team and stay with them till may 8th.  After that it's up to you if you stay or go home.

I read that as well, but I'm off on a camping trip fro a few weeks at WCG, mya switch over for a few days after that.

Quote
Ahh, my friend. I think you misunderstood me.
I'm not looking to take other WCG teams and combine them with us for the week, just trying to get all the members of Xtremesystems forum to come and show the computational power that resides in the forum.
I do greatly appreciate your offer but stay where you are please otherwise it defeats the purpose.

I've crunched with them before, I'll just move over after the trek for a week. If you read over at XS dosen't sound like that to me. But I've crunched with them in the past, so I'll just move over after the trek.

Ok, lads and ladettes ... Team BBT has officially challenged XtremeSystems to a points dual from the 1st to the 8th of May.  This is a handicap event to level the playing field but the shizz is ON!

I'd like to encourage everyone here to pick a side (I don't mind which, btw) and boost one of us to victory.  :thumb:

Question 1: Does XS want new peeps to join them or as some posts suggest just present members.

Question 2: Is BitbenderTech going to keep track of the teraflops produced during the time in question, I'd just as soon go to BitbenderTech and work on the mil i started there a while back..

XS are accepting temporary members and have actually GAINED several hundred new members in the last week.

I'll be tracking the output of both teams, but I'll have to find out how to convert points to teraflops.

The ball starts rolling in about 2 hours, folks.  :thumb:

Title: Re: Xtreme Systems Supercomputer Challenge
Post by: PiNkY on April 30, 2010, 04:57:26 PM
not sure there would be much of a way to convert points to teraflops unless you were to assume everyone is running the exact same setup.... ???

Title: Re: Xtreme Systems Supercomputer Challenge
Post by: Dark Angel on April 30, 2010, 05:09:57 PM
I was hoping there was a way to do by effectively averaging out the total teraflops based on points and run time.  I think I'd need a LOT more information on how WCG calculates point to work that out though.

I always had great difficulties with math.  No one ever explained why about anything.  They just said do it this way or get an F.

Title: Re: Xtreme Systems Supercomputer Challenge
Post by: Dark Angel on April 30, 2010, 10:08:40 PM
I expect that helps a lot, when you have a teacher that's willing to explain WHY you do things a certain way.

I got rather fed up with one on my kids' teachers.  Fool taught from the text book and if somebody didn't get it he'd just read the text at them over and over till they either got it or more likely just gave up.

Title: Re: Xtreme Systems Supercomputer Challenge
Post by: phicks on April 30, 2010, 10:10:15 PM
If someone will tell me WHY I can apply it to anything.  Without knowing why I was doing this or that it was an uphill battle.   :rick:

Title: Re: Xtreme Systems Supercomputer Challenge
Post by: rwillis on April 30, 2010, 10:19:21 PM
I'll have to root around to find it, but there was just such a discussion by the Boinc Developers a while back - RE: how to determine the best way to award points across different projects with folks using FooX hardware. It was an IRC I saved, and vaio was the one that hooked me into it. The basic question cam down to how to determine "what is the median system type".... If memory serves - the main point was with the exponential increase in system types, settings, technology it would be project in and of it's self to find the 'average'. The group was split on the feasibility. It was interesting reading - if I can find It I'll post it here.

My own .02 - you also have to account for the variables of how folks use the machines - so you have social variables to factor in as well.

See fun problem ;D

Ok folks, this is coming up again!

Just for the record, I am not suggesting in any way that existing WCG crunchers leave their home teams for this event.  That's not the point.  Rather I would like to encourage those who do not currently crunch with World Community Grid to lend a hand for the week of November 6th to 12th inclusive to try and achieve something extraordinary, the equivalent computing power of a top 100 mainframe but made up of personal computers.
Those who prefer not to contribute to the Xtreme Systems WCG team but wish to crunch anyway could pick any team of their liking as the work done benefits humanity as a whole no matter which team, if any, you choose to be a part of.  While this is a Xtreme Systems team event, all teams are welcome to use the idea to encourage new recruits for themselves.  :thumb:

Only a couple of days to go till SuperComputer Week Phase 2 kicks off!  :guru:

Those who don't wish to join XtremeSystems for the week are encouraged to see just how hard they can push their output at their home teams.  It's all for a good cause and it's only for a week so crank up everything you have!  :frank:

Also ... some idiot miss-read the notice.  The week is from the 1st to the 8th of November, not the 6th to the 12th  :rick:
