Currently running the UD windows client and was wondering if there is any reason to switch and try the BOINC windows client? There is some talk of BOINC work units returning more points than the UD client. How is the interface compared to the UD client? Would I have to rejoin my team and are there any issues with points transfer? Thanks.

Tele... I running both and have no problems with the Bionc client. In fact I'll be switching my other rigs over to it sometime over the weekend. You don't have to rejoin your team, when you register the client with the project, it'll guide you through the process - with WCG you will have to cut and paste the a key, and thne just fill in the blanks. As for pionts transfering, I'm not sure of the question, but I'm not watching my Bionc pionts at the moment. I also 'think' that the Bionc client runs faster on older/slower machines. I first intalled it on an 'marginal' by WCG standards laptop an the resource utilization looks to be lower, and the WU's finishing faster.

Hope this helps,
Rick

It seems many people are reporting points increase using BOINC, although I think this may be due to the fact that BOINC grades a machine using the processor only and ignores RAM and storage.

It also gives everyone who crunches a particular work unit the average score of that set of computers, I think (disregarding the high and low extremes). So, depending on the speed of your machine, you may benefit if your pc is slower, or lose if it's faster than the average computer that crunched that same unit. Or maybe I have it completely wrong - not sure yet  MrGreen

I'm also interested in interface comparisons between the two. Any preferences? And BOINC has a built in caching of units, if wanted?

Yes, BOINC caches WU's for you - simply set it to download x days of work (Max 10).  Better interface in my opinion - gives more info.  Downside of BOINC is that it awards points based on CPU time rather than wall time - not good if you run multiple projects.

What type of info does the interface give you that the UD client doesn't?

Which projects you are attached to and how much time, relative to the others, you will spend on each one;
List of individual WU's cached;
Time (CPU) spent on each WU;
Stage of completion (%);
Estimated time to complete;
Deadline for return of WU result;
Complete list of activities performed (eg time WU downloaded, time WU completed, time WU uploaded, time switched between projects, benchmark results);
Statistics (points) for each active project on that machine - total and average for the user and that particular machine;
Disk space usage.

Nice. Think I'll install it and give it a try. Thanks VAIO.

One last question: Can I choose to only run one of the two projects at WCG or do you run whatever they have when you attach to that project? I remember for a time people couldn't opt out of one (or add one, maybe?). Not sure if that's been resolved yet?

Not sure - I really don't care what the project is  as long as it has some value.  I think you can turn off projects for WCG but that is a setting that is part of your WCG profile rather than something to do with BOINC.

When BOINC was first brought on to WCG you could only do HPF and not [email protected]  I'm currently getting WU's for both.

Thanks Patty, VAIO, I thought it may be in the BOINC client that you had to select. Sounds easy enough then  Smiley
